 ·         Target Audience: Mid-level managers held accountable for taking executive direction and turning it into results.

 ·         Purpose—THE PAIN: Managers stuck in middle between knowing what they have to do and getting their people to do it often face the greatest challenge of their career—especially when the “what” is getting their organization to go in a new strategic direction.

 ·         Based on the pioneering work of Porter (1996), Hamel and Prahalad (1989), Bossidy and Charan (2002), Morgan, Levitt, and Malek (2008), and Leinwand and Mainardi (2016), the author has developed the following framework for “making strategy happen”; that is, putting into action the steps necessary to realize your strategic goals and outcomes.

 ·         The major elements necessary to turn strategy into action are: Vision, Intent, and Planning with their focus on strategic thought and Commitment, Execution and Accountability with their focus on tactical action. Your level of competence with respect to the behaviors and skills for “actioning” each of the six elements determines whether you meet or exceed your organization’s long-term outcomes.

 ·         Benefits—THE GAIN: To plug the gaps between strategic thinking and tactical action, enabling mid-level managers and their direct reports to make strategic action happen. The results are improvements to your organization’s financial, operational and human capital performance.

 ·         Model: Two major categories: Strategic Thought and Tactical Action. Six scales: Vision, Intent, Planning, Commitment, Execution, and Accountability. Items: five behavioral items per scale, 30 total items

 ·         Scale: 5-point

 ·         Interpretive Data: Discussion of the model; high/low score interpretation.

 ·         Action Planning.
